Engraved in His Palms

The title of this blog comes from the Book of Isaiah, chapter 49: 16. It says, "See, I have inscribed you on the palms of my hands." This image of engraved palms has a double meaning. One is that the palms are God's and engraved on his hands none of us could be forgotten. God cares about us all. We are all engraved on his palms. Imagine God using his hands to form and create and sustain all of creation. Every time he sets about to work, looking at his hands, he sees our names. What could be better for us?

When our lives get crazy, too busy and too much for us to take, we can breathe deeply for a moment, close our eyes, see that on God's hands are our names, and let go of our worries and fears. We are cared for, when no one else cares. We are remembered, when no one else remembers. In that moment, we find peace.
